Oral Assessment exercise: Chief Officer

At 14:30 hours on a warm July afternoon, you are dispatched to a reported fire at 1747 Ocean Ave. The building located at 1747 Ocean Ave. is a 1 story, Class 2 commercial warehouse measuring 225 ft. x 325 ft. Upon arrival, alarms are ringing and you observe smoke showing from the front door.

As you exit your vehicle a few employees are exiting the building yelling “there is a fire in the rack storage area.” At the same time a building manager comes up to you and states a few of employees are attempting to control the fire with extinguishers, but are not having great success. At that same moment the Fire communications Center contacts you via radio and states they are now receiving a smoke and sprinkler fire alarm for the same address. There is a 10 mph wind blowing from the west to the east. You respond with 2 Engine Co.s and 1 Ladder Co. You are the first arriving FD Unit.

* Stretch a 2.5 inch hose line to locate-confine and extinguish fire.

* Order/stretch back up 2.5 inch hose line.

* Use the reach of the stream to extinguish the content fire and also sweep the underside

of the truss supported metal deck roof.

* Utilize TIC to determine/confirm fire location and extent/spread.

* Have Ladder Companies:

* Raise aerial ladders to the roof.

* Vent skylights and natural ventilation openings (scuttle/access hatches).

* Horizontally vent opposite the movement of the engine companies movement.

* Coordinate all vent and search activities with engine companies movement.

* Search/Rescue and remove employees still within the building.

* Utilize search ropes with TIC’s

* Conduct air management (Big Building) with all members.

* Ready/open/control and advise all of secondary means of egress options.
